New Lord Howe Island Destination Management Plan 2024
The development of a new Destination Management Plan (DMP) for Lord Howe Island has been completed. The purpose of the DMP is to provide collective focus and long-term strategic direction and actions for sustainably managing the Lord Howe Island visitor economy to 2034. The intent includes maximising the positive benefits of tourism for the Island, safeguarding and enhancing its natural and cultural assets for the local community now and into the future. The plan will guide the sustainability of the visitor economy in a constantly changing and competitive market.
The DMP will be sent out to all members and stakeholders via email. If you would like a printed copy, please contact Pia at tourism@lordhoweisland.info or leave a request at the Visitor Centre.
The Stranded Chef in Gourmet Traveller
Lord Howe Island chef Dennis Tierney’s cookbook The Stranded Chef is featured in the May ‘Wild Issue’ of Gourmet Traveller, where he shares his incredible recipes from around the world: “…it was the chance to work on Lord Howe Island, the tiny sub-tropical land mass 600 kilometres east of New South Wales, that closed the loop between his life and loves”.
Try out his Turkish-style bread with parmesan (yum), or go catch a fish, forage wood ear mushrooms, and cook his famous dish inspired by how the forest meets the sea on Lord Howe Island.

Located about 600 kilometres east of Port Macquarie is a small, stunning island that is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and numerous unique species of plants, birds and marine life, so much so that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Patagonia’s newest short film, KIN, showcases the value of Marine Protected Areas for local communities and a thriving ocean and was announced last week.

“Patagonia is a brand with incredible values and is very active in seeing those values realised … Here on Lord Howe Island, protecting our diverse and unique environment has been of the highest priority ever since (and even before) our World Heritage listing in 1982. To be recognised for these efforts by a leader in our global community for eco-consciousness is an incredible honour and one that has created a beautiful buzz amongst the community.”

Record-breaking year for NSW as visitor expenditure soars past $50 billion
Domestic visitor fast facts:
- NSW attracted 102.5 million domestic visitors in the year ending December 2023 (9.3 per cent increase YoY)
- Domestic visitor expenditure reached a record high of $40.5 billion
- NSW, regional NSW and Sydney all achieved record domestic expenditure
- Sydney received 36 million domestic visitors who stayed 30.7 million nights and spent $15 billion
- Regional NSW received 67.5 million domestic visitors who stayed 86.4 million nights and spent $25.5 billion
- Regional NSW led regional Australia in day trip visitors and expenditure
- Nature-based activities and caravan/camping were major drawcards for visitors. NSW remained the top destination for caravan and camping in Australia
- 9 million overnight visitors participated in nature-based activities, spending $16.1 billion across their whole trip to NSW.
