Lord Howe Island Central School News March 2024

Happy To Be Here!

For those of you I’m yet to meet, I’m Darren Denmead, the new Principal at Lord Howe Island Central School and I’m very excited to be here! My wife Sarah and I have been so warmly welcomed and we can’t wait to share your beautiful school and island with you over the coming years.

Discovery Day

Thank you to our generous and hardworking parents and community for a fantastic Discovery Day Fish Fry, and to the whole community for your support. The money raised goes directly to supporting our kids at school and providing richer experiences for them. It was wonderful to see so many of you on the night and to join in the fun. I especially enjoyed seeing our students compete with a great spirit and sense of community pride, and I thought it fitting that the school team won out on the night!

Swimming Carnival

Well, Lord Howe Island really knows how to put on a school swimming carnival! Beautiful lagoon setting, great weather, absolutely amazing team of staff and parent helpers, wonderful students giving their all and cheering on their teams, and lots of great memories for all.

Of course it wouldn’t be a swimming carnival without the great rivalry between Lidgbird and Gower houses – and this year Gower get the bragging rights! The age champions are as follows:

Midget Boy – Cameron N (Cliffy S runner-up)
Minor Girl – Pele R (Freya S runner-up)
Minor Boy – Zac C (Otis K and Will T tied runners-up)
Junior Girl – Evie S (Charlo R runner-up)
Junior Boy – Art T (Archie B runner-up)\

Road Safety

Friday 22nd March was Ride Safely to School Day. We focused on Road Safety and had a very special visit from Senior Constable Joel Merchant, our local Police Officer, who worked with our kids to ensure they follow road rules and stay safe when on their bikes.

Values

Since the beginning of the year, staff and students have been working on individual and shared values – the set of beliefs and principles that are important in the way we work and live. There are many, such as honesty, humour, positivity, kindness, and gratitude to name a few, which can help us prioritise, and help guide our decision-making and the way we act towards others.
