Helping sick or injured wildlife

Sick or injured wildlife require specialist treatment and care. Attempts to feed and rehabilitate them at home are strongly discouraged. Although well-intended, these animals may suffer from inappropriate treatment.

A Flesh-footed Shearwater chick separated from its parents, reported to the LHIB in February 2024

Birds are the most frequently encountered wild animals on the Island requiring care. If you find a sick, injured, or weak bird, gently pick them up if it is safe to do so and carefully place them in a warm, dark, and quiet place like a box with ventilation holes. Note the location of the bird and wash your hands thoroughly after handling.

Quicky transferring injured animals to specialised care helps ensure their best chance of survival. The Island Vet, Courtney Turner, and Debbie Thompson provide free, licensed care for wildlife. Do not handle bats. Sick or injured bats should be reported to Liam Murphy. Sick or injured turtles and marine mammals should be reported to Marine Parks, telephone: 02 6563 2359.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
