Transport for NSW is conducting a two-stage open market expression of interest process for airlines interested in operating the regulated air routes between Sydney and Moree and Sydney and Lord Howe Island.
The two routes are the only regulated routes in NSW that require licences in accordance with the Air Transport Act (NSW) 1964.
With the current licences due to expire on 29 March 2025, the open market process will commence on Thursday, 20 June 2024 with new licences to be awarded no later than 29 September 2024.
Proponents who qualify through an initial expression of interest stage will then be invited to apply for a licence for one or both regulated routes.
All airlines, including regional airlines, can participate in the open market process by replying to Transport’s expression of interest by Thursday, 4 July 2024.
Transport for NSW’s Executive Director Transport Partnerships Holly Taylor said being connected was essential for these communities.
“More than 15,000 tourists from Australia and overseas visit Lord Howe Island every year via the Sydney to Lord Howe route while around 31,000 people used the Sydney to Moree service in 2023,” Ms Taylor said.
“These air services are critical connections for these communities, providing access to essential services including health care and education as well as shopping, visiting friends, family and business.”
Factors that must be considered under the Act before an air transport licence can be granted include the needs of the public and affirming the applicant’s character and suitability to hold the licence.
Other factors include the effect on public air transport services, economic development, the environment, and rights to operate aircraft.
