Letter from the Editor November 2024

November is a busy month on Lord Howe with many packaged groups and bird watchers visiting the Island. All have enjoyed the beautiful weather and nature has certainly been putting on a wonderful and spectacular display of colours and lights.

This month Greenpeace Australia has visited the Island gathering information for its campaign to protect the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand under a new United Nations Ocean Treaty. The visiting group was literally “blown away by the love that locals have for this special place.”

The popularity of the Island is not just obvious in the number of visitors but also in the awards received by the local Island businesses such as Thornleigh Farm’s Golden Marmalade award, and Ben’s fish truck, judged the second-best fish and chip outlet in Australia. The ABC programs by Emma and Hannah highlight our positive community, with so many people providing friendly hospitality towards our visitors. Even the kids have a slice of the action, with Abide Family Ministries posting the first of an eight-part series about the Island on YouTube, with puppets providing the main travelogue about the Island. Finally, we wish to congratulate Lois Whistler on reaching her 100th birthday. She is a wonderful example of sensible and healthy living on our equally wonderful Island!
